AM Best rating

An AM Best rating is a letter grade from the AM Best agency that measures an insurance company's financial strength and its ability to pay claims. Grades run from A++ at the top down through B, C, and lower, and they signal how dependable an insurer is.

In plain terms: A financial-strength grade that shows how likely an insurer is to keep its promises.

In depth

An AM Best rating is like a credit score for an insurance company. It does not predict your return, but it tells you how solid the company behind your guarantee is. As of July 30, 2026, Axonic Insurance carries an A- (Excellent) rating and Oceanview Life carries an A (Excellent) rating. Because an annuity's guarantees rest on the insurer's claims-paying ability, the rating is a core check before you buy.

Why it matters

Your annuity's guarantees are only as strong as the company standing behind them, and there is no FDIC backstop here. Checking the AM Best rating is a simple way to gauge that strength before committing your money.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good AM Best rating for an annuity company?
Ratings in the A range (A++, A+, A, A-) signal a superior or excellent ability to meet obligations. As of July 30, 2026, examples in our data include Oceanview Life at A and Axonic Insurance at A-. Many buyers set a minimum rating threshold before they shop.
Does an AM Best rating mean my annuity is insured?
No. The rating measures the insurer's financial strength, not insurance on your money. Annuities are not FDIC insured; their guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer, which is exactly what the rating helps you assess.
