Annuity Bonuses and Lifetime Income Riders

Some fixed index annuities credit a bonus when you buy, either to your contract value or to the separate income base a rider uses, and most of those can add a rider that guarantees an income for life, backed by the issuing insurer. The two numbers only mean something together, so every card below shows the bonus in dollars beside the annual income the product illustrates at age 65. Set your investment amount at the top and every figure follows it. These are dated illustration examples, not quotes.

Mechanics come from the carrier's 2022 highlights sheet (8% deferral credit, 5.15% at 65). A 2026 third party review reports a richer current version (10% credit and about 5.90% at 65, which would be near $8,850), so treat this as a conservative dated figure pending a current carrier rate sheet.

How to read these figures
  • Every card shows a dollar figure for a year of income. Some of those figures are published by the carrier, some are calculated from rates the carrier publishes (the arithmetic is in each card's details), and some are estimates built from this board's own median rates where a carrier publishes nothing usable. Every estimate says Estimated on its face and states its assumption there; every other card shows the date of its own figures.
  • Figures come from three kinds of source, named in each card's details: dated editorial illustration examples, third-party review summaries, and carrier brochures or rate sheets. None of them is a live quote or a personalized illustration.
  • Some figures are a guaranteed floor. Those are worked out assuming the contract earns no index credits at all, so the real income can be higher, and the card says so under the number.
  • Payout percentages live in each product's details now, under the published income-by-age table. A payout percentage is an approximate withdrawal percentage of the benefit base at that age. It is not an interest rate and not a rate of return.
  • Every published figure is illustrated on a $100,000 premium. Choosing a different investment amount scales those figures in a straight line, which is how the sources publish them. Real bonus rates and payout rates are often banded by premium, so a different amount can change the rate itself, not only the dollars. A real illustration also depends on your age, your state, and the product's own minimum premium.
  • A bonus added to your income base is not cash you can withdraw. It raises only the base used to calculate lifetime income, and it is usually forfeited if you surrender the contract for its value. A bonus added to your contract value is part of your account, and it often vests over several years before it is fully yours.
  • A bonus is not free. Products that pay one usually carry a longer surrender period, higher surrender charges, or lower caps and participation rates than a similar product without a bonus. Compare the whole contract, not the bonus.
  • These are long-term contracts. Taking more than the contract allows during the surrender period triggers a surrender charge, and withdrawals before age 59 and a half can carry a 10% federal tax penalty.
  • Income riders carry an annual fee, typically 0.90% to 1.25% of the benefit base. A few are built into the contract at no separate charge, and some sources publish no fee at all. Each product's fee, or the absence of one, is listed in that product's details.
  • Every figure is single life. Joint-life income is lower on nearly every product. F&G SecureIncome 7 also publishes a joint-life payout at ages 65 and 63, which its details keep separate from the single-life figure.
  • Two products cannot honestly show an age-65 figure and label themselves instead. MassMutual Ascend Index Protector 7 reads Income at 66, because the carrier's illustrated rates start there. Allianz 222 reads Income at 70, because lifetime income on that contract cannot begin until the tenth contract year; the number shown is the carrier's published age-70 figure, not a projection back to 65.
  • Several roll-ups are performance-driven, a multiple of the index interest credited to the benefit base rather than a guaranteed fixed percentage. That is stated in each of those products' details.
  • Some review-sourced products date back several years and the generation shown may no longer be sold; the caution appears in that product's details.
  • Guarantees are backed by the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability. Annuities are not FDIC insured.
  • Products, riders, bonuses, and payout rates vary by state and change at carrier renewal. An advisor confirms what is actually available to you.
  • AnnuaLife is a licensed insurance agency. We are paid a commission by the insurance company when you buy, not by you. How we get paid
